Wisconsin Farm\nBureau\u2019s Ag in the Classroom program has awarded 13 teacher mini-grants to be\nused for agricultural literacy lessons and activities. The $100 grants, funded\nby the Wisconsin Farm Bureau Foundation, provide opportunities for teachers to\nobtain funding that may not be available through their local school budgets. <\/p>\n\n\n\n

The following\nteachers were awarded grants:<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Ag on the Lawn<\/strong><\/p>\n\n\n\n

Lisa Jagielo – Unity High School, Balsam\nLake<\/strong><\/p>\n\n\n\n

The Unity Ag on\nthe Lawn event is held annually each May. Elementary teachers sign up for\nspecific times to tour the presentations and displays organized by the FFA\nmembers. The grant will be used to purchase Ag Today Readers and American Farm Bureau\nFoundation for Agriculture Food and Farm Fact pencils that help educate\nstudents about agriculture.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Agriculture Awareness for All!<\/strong><\/p>\n\n\n\n

Kirstin Thompson – Greenfield Elementary,\nBaldwin<\/strong><\/p>\n\n\n\n

Students will\nbe expected to research rural life skills, conduct interviews of real-life\nexperts in the community, design a three-dimensional model related to the topic\nand do a speaking presentation to show others what has been learned. Funds will\nbe used to order a variety of books that students will utilize for research and\nlearning.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Agriculture Library Expansion<\/strong><\/p>\n\n\n\n

Stacey Kunde – Brillion Public Schools,\nBrillion<\/strong><\/p>\n\n\n\n

Students will\nbe encouraged to increase their reading of agricultural materials that are age\nappropriate and connect to course work and their interests. Funds will be used\nto buy agriculture-related books and magazine subscriptions to increase the\nselection available to students district wide. <\/p>\n\n\n\n

Brooding Chicks<\/strong><\/p>\n\n\n\n

Stephanie DeVries – Cambria-Friesland\nSchools, Cambria<\/strong><\/p>\n\n\n\n

Having chicks\nin the classroom allows students to learn about nutrition, care, anatomy and\nclean-up of the chicks and cages. After raising the chicks to maturity, the\nbirds will be processed in the food prep class. Funds will be used to purchase\na battery brooder, feed, probiotics and eggs. <\/p>\n\n\n\n

Careers in the Ag World<\/strong><\/p>\n\n\n\n

Cindi Syverson – South Middle School,\nEau Claire<\/strong><\/p>\n\n\n\n

Students will\nexplore post-secondary education options using a college pass and tour career\nfields and pathways exploration. Funds will be used to help with a career\nexperience at Chippewa Valley Technical College.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Growing Plants from Seeds<\/strong><\/p>\n\n\n\n

John Slipek- Abbotsford High School,\nAbbotsford<\/strong><\/p>\n\n\n\n

High school\nstudents will work with second grade students to purchase seed, soil and\ncontainers for use during a nine-week unit. Each student will be able to plant seeds,\nmonitor their growth and observe germination differences, soil temperature,\nmoisture, sunlight, growth rate and other factors.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Increasing Agricultural History and\nLiteracy<\/strong><\/p>\n\n\n\n

Kate Van Haren- Pittsville Elementary\nSchool, Pittsville<\/strong><\/p>\n\n\n\n

This project\nwill help fourth and fifth grade students understand and appreciate the role\nthat agriculture has played in shaping human development and human history. Students\nwill read, discuss and then explain how the invention and progression of\nagriculture allowed the human population to grow. The grant will be used to\npurchase a variety of books on agricultural history.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Let\u2019s Explore Agriculture!<\/strong><\/p>\n\n\n\n

Leigh Walske and Sarah Burmeister -Rexford\/Longfellow\nElementary School, Clintonville<\/strong><\/p>\n\n\n\n

The Let\u2019s\nExplore Agriculture! Project will bring agriculture to first-grade classrooms\nduring scheduled science time. The projects will explore animal and plant\nscience while developing an agricultural journal to organize student\nobservations. The grant will be used for curriculum and books, plant science\nactivities, animal related projects and Learning Lab kits. <\/p>\n\n\n\n

Life Lessons Learned\u2026After School<\/strong><\/p>\n\n\n\n

Lori Wick – UW-Extension and Argyle\nSchool District<\/strong><\/p>\n\n\n\n

Lafayette\nCounty UW-Extension has partnered with the Argyle School District to offer an\nafter-school program teaching life-skills and agricultural literacy to students\nin second-fourth grades. Students will cover fabric, textiles, where fiber\nmaterials come from and other related topics. Funds will be used for teaching-related\nsnacks and supplies for the program.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Reading in Agri-Science<\/strong><\/p>\n\n\n\n

Nathaniel Nolden – Wisconsin Dells High\nSchool, Wisconsin Dells<\/strong><\/p>\n\n\n\n

The Reading in\nAgri-Science project is designed to provide students with reading materials to\nchoose from during class or homeroom period. The grant will be used to buy a\nvariety of books covering a range of Lexile levels and languages that can be\ncataloged and entered into a Google Form tracking system so all students can\naccess them. <\/p>\n\n\n\n

The Giving Garden<\/strong><\/p>\n\n\n\n

Jarred Beduze – Northland Lutheran High\nSchool, Kronenwetter<\/strong><\/p>\n\n\n\n

This project\nwill translate seeds, garden and planting words and phrases from English into\nSpanish to help students connect to The Giving Garden. This will help students\ncreate a story in Spanish about the history of the Giving Garden. The grant\nwill be used for translation needs and to purchase seeds, fertilizer, garden\nstakes and reusable pots. <\/p>\n\n\n\n

Water and Light Experiments<\/strong><\/p>\n\n\n\n

Joel Putz – Immanuel Lutheran School,\nManitowoc<\/strong><\/p>\n\n\n\n

Students will\nlearn that seeds need water, light and nutrients to grow properly and will be\nable to make and test a hypothesis. Through testing and experiments on various\nplants, students will complete their research and present their results. Funds\nwill be used for Grow Lights, timers, soil moisture sensors and other research equipment.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Wisconsin Agriculture<\/strong><\/p>\n\n\n\n

Andrea Waski – St. Victor\u2019s School,\nMonroe<\/strong><\/p>\n\n\n\n

The goal of\nthis project is to work with the Monroe FFA to introduce students to the unique\nareas of Wisconsin agriculture, understand where food comes form, create\nawareness of the value of agriculture in the county and state and use hands-on\nexploration that is cross-curricular and encourages investigation. Funds will\nbe used to purchase Ag Mags, Ag Today Readers, American Farm Bureau Foundation\nfor Agriculture pencils, Food and Farm Fact books and trivia cards.<\/p>\n\n\n\n
